Hi everyone! I'm planning to set up a small off-grid solar power system for my family (2 adults, 2 kids) and I’m wondering how many solar panels I’ll need to meet our basic energy needs. We’ll mainly use electricity for lights, a few small appliances (like a fridge, TV, and phone charging), and a well pump for water.

Could anyone share their experience or offer a general guideline on how to calculate the number of panels I should start with? Also, any advice on battery storage and system sizing would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

We set up a similar off-grid solar system for our family of 4 with 12 panels, and we’re very happy with it. For your needs (lights, fridge, TV, phone charging, well pump), you’ll likely use around 2.9kWh per day. A 250W panel typically produces about 1kWh per day, so you’d need around 3-4 panels.

We found that 12 panels gave us plenty of capacity, even during cloudy days. For battery storage, aim for at least 6-9kWh to cover 2-3 days of usage.

Good luck with your setup!
